Dimensity 720 vs Dimensity 820: CPU, GPU & Manufacturing Process
Start the comparison with their CPU section, here in both you get an octa-core CPU based on 64-bit architecture. Here in the Dimensity 820, you get 4 ARM Cortex-A76 Performance Cores running at up to 2.60GHz and 4 ARM Cortex-A55 Efficiency Cores clocked at up to 2.00GHz whereas the newer Dimensity 720 has 2 ARM Cortex-A76 Big Cores clocked at up to 2Ghz and 6 ARM Cortex-A55 Little Cores that also can be operated at up to 2Ghz clock speed.
Here the Dimensity 820 has a cluster of 4 x 4 Cores while Dimensity 720 has a cluster of 2 x 6 Cores and the clock speed is also better of the Dimensity 820. So in terms of CPU Processing, the Dimensity 820 is ahead of the Dimensity 720, of course, the Dimensity 720 is a downgrade of the Dimensity 820.
Gaming-wise the Dimensity 720 has an ARM Mali G57 MC3 GPU whereas Dimensity 820 got an ARM Mali-G57 MC5 GPU paired with MediaTek HyperEngine Gaming 2.0 Technology. Here also the Dimensity 820 has a better GPU in comparison of the Dimensity 720 because of which it can offer a better gaming experience than the Dimensity 720.
In this section, both chipsets are the same. Both are built on the 7nm manufacturing process of TSMC. So in terms of power-efficiency, both chipsets use the same power and both are power-efficient.
Dimensity 720 vs Dimensity 820: Camera, Memory & Display
In the camera section, the newer Dimensity 720 has support for a dual camera of up to 20MP + 16MP and a single-camera of up to 64MP whereas the Dimensity 820 supports dual cameras of up to 32MP + 16MP and single-camera of up to 80MP. Here also the Dimensity 820 is much better than the Dimensity 720.
Here the Dimensity 820 has support for up to 16MP LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 based storage while the Dimensity 720 can support up to 12GB LPDDR4x RAM operating at up to 2133MHz and UFS 2.2 based storage.
In the display section, the Dimensity 720 can handle up to Full HD+ 90Hz displays while the Dimensity 820 supports up to Full HD+ 120Hz displays. Here also the Dimensity 820 has better display support than the Dimensity 720.
For handling AI Tasks, Dimensity 820 got the MediaTek APU 3.0 which provides up to 300% faster ETHZ AI benchmark performance than direct competitors. A unique FP16 and INT16 capable design generate the most precise AI-camera actions for the best quality video capture or streaming results, while also maximizing power efficiency. This includes activities such as AI-Recognition (for example, objects, scenes, or people), AI-Super Resolution and AI-deblur functions.
While on the other side, the Dimensity 720 has the MediaTek APU 2.0 which can outperform the APU 3.0 present on the Dimensity 820.
Connectivity-wise both are 5G ready chipsets, where the Dimensity 720 comes with an on-die 5G modem that can pull 2CC carrier aggregation, VoNR, 4G/5G dual SIM dual standby, and support for sub-6Ghz 5G. Network speeds max out somewhere around 2.34Gbps. While the Dimensity 820 also has great downloading and uploading speed. Both have support for Wifi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, FM Radio, GPS, etc.
