Recently Qualcomm and Huawei launched their new chipsets. Qualcomm launched its Snapdragon 690 while Huawei launched its Kirin 820 SoC. Both are 5G ready chipsets where the Snapdragon 690 is a mid-range chipset, close to upper-mid-range whereas the Kirin 820 is an upper-mid-range chipset. The Kirin 820 has Cortex-A76 Cores while Snapdragon 690 has Cortex-A77 Cores, but still, both have a great mid-range performance. Snapdragon 690 vs Kirin 820: CPU & GPU

CPU

First of all, let’ talk about the CPU. Here in both SoCs, you get an octa-core CPU based on 64-bit memory architecture. Here the Snapdragon 690 features 2 ARM Cortex-A77 Gold Cores running at up to 2.00GHz and 6 ARM Cortex-A55 Silver Cores operating at up to 1.70GHz clock speed whereas the Kirin 820 has 1 ARM Cortex-A76 Big Core clocked at up to 2.36GHz, 3 ARM Cortex-A76 Middle Cores clocked at up to 2.22GHz and 4 ARM Cortex-A55 Little Cores that can be operated at up to 1.84GHz clock speed.

Here the Kirin 820 has better clock speed in comparison of Snapdragon 690 while the SD 690 has better CPU architecture because of which both have close CPU performance. Both perform well in terms of CPU processing.

GPU

Coming to the CPU part, here for gaming, the Snapdragon 690 got the Adreno 619L GPU while the Kirin 820 integrates an ARM Mali-G57 6-Cores GPU pared with Kirin Gaming+ 2.0 technology. The Mali-G57 has a flagship performance whereas the Adreno 619L is a mid-range GPU, so it can’t outperform the Mali-G57 GPU present on the Kirin 820 5G SoC. So in the case of gaming, the Kirin 820 is ahead of Snapdragon 690 5G.

Manufacturing Process

Here is also a little difference between both chipsets. The Snapdragon 690 is built using the 8nm LPP Process technology whereas the Kirin 820 is designed at 7nm manufacturing process. The difference of 1nm makes the Kirin 820 more power-efficient than Snapdragon 690. So in terms of power-efficiency, also the Kirin 820 is better than Snapdragon 690.

Snapdragon 690 vs Kirin 820: Camera, Memory & Display

Camera

Coming to the camera section, here the Snapdragon 690 comes with the Qualcomm Spectra 355L image signal processor which is a 14 bit dual ISP and supports dual camera of up to 16 + 16MP while in the case of a single camera, it can support up to 32MP single camera with MFNR & ZSL. Without MFNR & ZSL, it can handle up to 192MP camera sensor.

On the other hand, the Kirin 820 pack in Kirin ISP 5.0 which brings support for BM3D SLR image noise reduction and supports up to 48MP + 24MP dual and single-camera of up to 64MP.

Memory

Here both chipsets are the same. Both have support for up to 8GB 16bit dual-channel LPDDR4x RAM operating at up to 2133MHz.
The Snapdragon 690 supports UFS 2.1 & eMMC 5.1 while the Kirin 820 has support for UFS 2.1 & UFS 3.0 types of storage.

Display

In the display section, the Kirin 820 has support for Full HD Plus displays with a maximum display resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels whereas the Snapdragon 690 also supports Full HD Plus displays with a maximum display resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels.

Artificial Intelligence

All the chipsets of Huawei and MediaTek bring a great AI Performance, although the mid-range chipsets have a flagship-level AI Processing. Speaking of the Kirin 820 goy an in-house DaVinci NPU, which improves AI performance by 73% over the Kirin 810.

On the other side, Snapdragon 690 features Qualcomm Hexagon 692 Processor for handling AI tasks and it is coupled with Dual Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX), Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, Qualcomm Sensing Hub and Qualcomm Hexagon Scalar Accelerator. Having these features also the Snapdragon 690 can’t beat Kirin 820 in terms of AI Processing. So in terms of AI Processing, the HiSilicon Kirin 820 is much better chipset in comparison to Snapdragon 690.

Connectivity Features

Connectivity-wise, the Kirin 820 has the same modem as the Kirin 990, which supports dual-mode SA/NSA 5G. It has a Balong 5G Modem which can provide a maximum downloading speed of up to 2.3Gbps and an uploading speed of 1.25Gbps.

While the Snapdragon 690 integrates the Qualcomm Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF System that has a maximum downloading speed of up to 2.5Gbps and an uploading speed of up to 660Mbps. While at 4G network, it can achieve a maximum downloading speed of up to 1.2Gbps and an uploading speed of up to 210Mbps. For fast charging, it has support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology. Other features like WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio are the same in both SoCs.
